Speak Catalan from minute one

Catalan is the everyday language of Barcelona and all of Catalonia: schools teach in it, the administration works in it and a large part of daily life runs on it, from the neighbours to team meetings. Spanish gets you through an Erasmus year or a job there, but Catalan is what stops you being a visitor. On paper it is friendly: Latin script, Romance grammar without noun cases and plenty of vocabulary you recognise from Spanish, French or English. Out loud it has its own sound: open and closed e and o, a neutral vowel that unstressed a and e turn into, ny as in canyon, x often pronounced sh and the l·l of col·legi. In Godoj you talk with Núria or Jordi from lesson one, at your level. After every conversation AI shows you pronunciation, mistakes and the words worth keeping.

The hard part of Catalan

Pronunciation and the small words. Central Catalan reduces unstressed a and e to a neutral vowel and unstressed o to u, tells open and closed e and o apart (net, clean, and nét, grandson, are different words), and has sounds like ny, ll and the l·l of col·legi. The pronouns en and hi have no English equivalent, and the everyday past tense is built with anar: vaig parlar means I spoke, not I am going to speak. Spanish speakers get one more trap, Spanish words and structures slipping into their Catalan.

What is easier than people expect

The Latin alphabet with a few accents, no noun cases, verbs that follow the same logic as Spanish, French or Italian, and a large vocabulary shared with English through Latin. Spelling is consistent once you know how the vowels reduce, and anyone who speaks Spanish or French recognises a good part of the language from day one.

A1 - C2

What a Catalan conversation looks like at each level

A1

At A1 you introduce yourself, order a coffee and pa amb tomàquet, ask for directions and manage numbers, prices and the time in short sentences.

A2

At A2 you talk about your week, describe your work or studies and your flat, deal with a pharmacy or a doctor's appointment and tell a short story in the past tense.

B1

At B1 you hold a conversation with colleagues or classmates, explain a problem to a landlord or at the town hall, give an opinion with reasons and keep going when people do not slow down or switch to Spanish for you.

B2

At B2 you argue a point, follow a fast dinner conversation, use en and hi without thinking and keep Spanish words out of your sentences.

C1

At C1 you present at work or in a seminar, handle humour and understatement, move between formal and casual registers and follow Valencian and Balearic speakers without effort.

C2

At C2 you carry irony and nuance precisely, catch what goes unsaid and are limited only by what you want to say.

You do not have to guess your own level. The tutor works it out during the first conversation and adjusts speed and vocabulary from there.

FAQ

Questions about learning Catalan

How long does it take to learn Catalan?

Comfortable everyday conversation (roughly CEFR B1) usually takes about 250-350 hours of study, and professional working proficiency about 600-750 hours. The US Foreign Service Institute tables do not list this language separately, so this is the range for its closest relatives, measured for English-speaking learners: a reference point rather than a promise. What moves the number is how many of those hours you spend actually speaking: 10 minutes of conversation a day gets you further than an hour of passive review once a week.

Do I need to learn the writing system before I start speaking Catalan?

No. The alphabet is Latin with a few extra characters, and those are mostly a pronunciation question, which you pick up by ear anyway. You can read your conversation transcript from day one.

Is Catalan the same language as Valencian?

Yes. Valencian and Balearic are varieties of the same language. Pronunciation, some vocabulary and a few verb endings differ, but people from Barcelona, Valencia and Mallorca understand each other without trouble. Our tutors speak standard central Catalan, as heard in Barcelona, which is understood wherever Catalan is spoken.

Do I need Catalan in Barcelona if everyone speaks Spanish?

For shopping, no. For living there, sooner or later, yes. Catalan is the main language of schools and the administration in Catalonia, of many university courses and of a large part of social life. And a few sentences in Catalan change the tone of a conversation right away.

How hard is Catalan to learn?

For an English speaker it is one of the more approachable languages: Romance grammar without noun cases and a lot of vocabulary shared through Latin. The real work is pronunciation and small words like the pronouns en and hi, which English does not have. If you already speak Spanish you will move fast, but watch for Spanish slipping in, such as vale where Catalan says d'acord. Both improve faster by speaking and hearing corrections than by reading tables.

Which variety of Catalan do the tutors speak?

The tutors stay in one variety throughout: standard central Catalan (Barcelona). Every language has a female and a male voice, so you hear two different timbres and two speaking speeds rather than one recording on repeat.

Can I practise speaking Catalan on my own, without a conversation partner?

That is the whole point of the app. The AI tutor picks up at any hour, with nothing to schedule and nobody to find, and a session can run 5 minutes or half an hour. It does not judge, does not sigh, and you can ask it to repeat something ten times in a row. After the conversation you get an analysis: what went well, where the mistakes were, and which words you were missing.

Is an AI tutor enough to learn Catalan, or do I need a native speaker?

For daily speaking practice AI is enough, and it has one advantage over a person: it is available in the 10 free minutes you actually have. We do not pretend it replaces a teacher, though. A human reads your goal better, runs a longer programme, prepares you for an exam and catches cultural nuance. The healthiest setup is AI every day plus a human every so often, if you can have both.

What level do I need to start?

Any level from zero to C2. At A1 the tutor speaks slowly in short, simple sentences, helps when you get stuck, and gradually builds up your answers. You can change your level anytime or follow the AI's recommendation after lessons.

How much does it cost?

You start free: 10 minutes of conversation over 7 days, no card required. Then the 90-minute plan at $24 (€20) a month, or the 250-minute plan at $48 (€40), up to 3 languages.
